Student Loan Refinancing

Want to refinance your student loan and get out of debt? Student Loan Consolidation information

Consolidation Of Student Loans

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Paying for college can be a real hassle especially when you graduated from your school almost a decade ago. Many graduates think that the six months they have before the required scheduled repayment of their various college debts is an eternity. The six months is nothing compared to the years of payments ahead of you. A consolidation of student loans can make the monthly much less painful.

I used to have three separate student loan bills. Two were for my undergraduate studies (which I have decided I actually couldn’t afford) and one was for graduate school (which I definitely could not afford). Paying all three bills in a timely manner was a real headache for me.

Part of the problem lies in the simple fact that I have trouble remembering to complete tasks that I really don’t want to complete. There must be some kind of subconscious thing going on here that I haven’t come to terms with as of yet. The best solution for me was to get a consolidation of student loans.

The process of finding a lender that will accommodate your needs is no problem at all. In fact, many of these lenders come to you. A consolidation of student loans has helped me keep track of my account much easier and it afforded me a few extra dollars each month. Actually, I save about 150 bucks each month through the consolidation.

This extra money is wonderful but I also like to put a little extra on the principal each month. This is a great way to knock down the principal quicker and avoid paying too much interest. I find that the smaller monthly payments I got through the consolidation of student loans helps me make an extra payment here and there. This makes a world of difference.

The other benefit of choosing a consolidation of student loans is the interest rate itself. Even though you are refinancing the debt you will still receive an excellent rate of interest no matter what your credit is like. This is a great benefit for anyone who wants a consolidation of student loans without the fear of hiking interest rates.

I chose to take this route about two years ago and I definitely made the right decision. I have smaller payments as well as the promise of paying off the entire debt in less time than I though I would. A consolidation of student loans is a great way to gain control of this monster of a debt.

What You Need to Know about Consolidating Student Loans

Tip! Other Loans - Other sources of student loans could be something like a home equity loan, which offers tax benefits. Since grants and scholarships are far and few student loans have become an increasingly popular method of financing one's studies.

Chances are if you've taken out student loans in order to finance your education you have been, or at least will be, receiving calls and offers in the mail to consolidate your student loans. There are actually numerous advantages to consolidating your student loans. In addition to gaining a fixed interest rate you can also potentially lower your monthly payments. In the event that you begin to experience financial difficulties, you may also be able to take advantage of flexible payment options with a consolidated student loan.

Unlike other types of debt consolidation programs a student loan consolidation gives you the opportunity to combine your loans into one package with more attractive terms. You also don't have to worry about being turned down because of a bad credit score and the interest on the loan may be tax deductible. In addition, in the event of your death your survivors won't have to worry about paying it back because the debt will be discharged.

Tip! Online student loans are affordable with very low rate of interest.

If you have a variable interest rate student loan, consolidating the loan can also help you to lock in a lower rate before the rates increase the next year. Over the length of the loan, this one step can actually help to save you a tremendous amount of money.

Of course, in addition to the advantages there are also some disadvantages of which you should be aware. One of the most important is that if you end up lowering your monthly payment you are actually extending the length of the loan and that means you'll pay more over the life of the loan due to increased interest. You can still take advantage of the other benefits of a student loan consolidation without this disadvantage; however. Just don't lower your payments unless it is really necessary.

When considering lenders for a student loan consolidation it is important that you always compare the terms of each offer made to you. Consider the interest rate and length of the repayment terms to be sure you are getting the best deal possible.

Tip! Government Student Loans – Government student loans are issued by the Department of Education and are granted directly to the students. The students need to repay the loan with interest when their studies get over.

If you have a mix of both federal and private student loans, you should also be aware that while both types of loans are available to be consolidated it may not be a good idea to consolidate your federal loans and private loans together in the same package. There are stipulations on private loans that are not required on federal student loans, such as no deferments, no tax deductions on the interest, no forgiveness of the debt in the event of death and no forgiveness of the loan for working in certain fields. In the event of a mix of private and federal, it's usually best to go ahead and consolidate the private loans separately from the federal loans so that you can retain those advantages for the federal loans.

Tip! Having Simple Loan Payments. By consolidating your student loans, you only have one loan payment per month and one check to write.

By understanding all of the factors related to student loan consolidation you will be in a better position to make a more informed decision regarding your finances.
